Silvia Gordillo Abello
Hola hola, this is Silvia, and this is my portrait. A hybrid between a Spaniard and a Weegie, definitely by now, I was born and bred in the green coast of Spain in the Northern county of Asturias (Patria Querida) 46 years ago. However, I have always felt linked to Scotland somehow: blame the weather, the Celtic Connection of our ancestors or simply destiny! Whatever it was, after studying a degree in English at university, I took a suitcase, saw my mere 1000 euros shrink to £600, and landed in a wee room in Govan with no return ticket.
Not knowing very well where to start, I worked in restaurants, conferences, weddings, football games, charities, … I signed up for any free courses I saw and started building a life here. I learned tons in every job and met amazing people; I got to explore some of the most stunning buildings the city has to offer and learn about the history of the place whilst working as waiting staff; I enjoyed soaking in the music and artistic Glasgow culture when out with new friends; but probably most prominently, I got to know first-hand the hardships of the less fortunate and help change their lives and views when working for the East End charity Playbusters (always in my heart!). In 2016, I managed to go solo and started VamosGlasgow, a Spanish school I envisioned different to others in the approach and the delivery. Hoping to be a bridge in between cultures, we talk the talk and walk the walk, appreciating both societies and traditions, constantly learning from each other, and bringing joy, community, support and friendship to the best of our abilities.
See you out and about ☺️
